Getting Started

One installer is all it takes. After installation KingCapture lives in the tray, and running it without arguments opens the launcher.

KingCapture
  1. Install Get the installer from the download page and run it. The finish page lets you choose [Run at Windows startup]; change it any time in Settings › General.
  2. First run A KingCapture icon appears in the tray. A welcome note shows once; after that there are no popups at boot. Double-click the icon = launcher, right-click = menu.
  3. First capture Press Ctrl+Alt+A, or hold Ctrl+Alt and drag. Once you confirm the region it goes to the clipboard, is saved to a file, and the finish popup appears.
  4. Where it is saved The default folder is Documents\KingCapture. See them again in the recent captures strip of the launcher, in the gallery (thumbnails · details · list) or via the tray [Library].
Tip — You can keep your existing capture tool — KingCapture does not take the Print Screen key until you turn it on.

Capturing

There are three ways to start a capture — the gesture, a hotkey, or the launcher/tray. All of them open the same selection screen.

KingCapture region selection
  • Ctrl+Alt+dragOn any screen, hold Ctrl+Alt and drag to capture that region. The modifier (Ctrl+Shift+Alt) and the trigger distance (4–32 px) can be changed in Settings › Hotkey extensions.
  • HotkeysCtrl+Alt+A region · Ctrl+Alt+F full screen · Ctrl+Alt+W active window · Ctrl+Alt+R repeat last region — all changeable.
  • Launcher · trayThe items in the [Screen capture] column of the launcher, and in the tray menu [Specific window ▸] (list with window icons) · [Full screen ▸] (pick a monitor) · [Shape capture ▸] (several shapes).
  • Selection screenA round scope loupe shows color · position · size. After dragging, adjust with the handles, then Enter · Space to save or Esc to cancel. The top bar switches modes.
  • KeysArrow keys move 1 px (Ctrl 10 px, Shift resizes) · Shift+drag = square · Space while dragging = move the start point · click = snap to a window (Tab for the whole window) · Z loupe · M include cursor · C clipboard only · S file only
  • Scrolling · web pageScrolling: pick a window and it stitches as you scroll the wheel (Esc saves what you have). Web page: open an address in the built-in browser (Alt+D for the address bar) and capture the whole page in one image — requires the WebView2 Runtime.
  • Freeform · shape · fixed sizeFreeform cuts along the path you drag; shape capture cuts to the shape you pick — the outside is saved transparent. Fixed size opens a preset W×H frame in the middle of the screen.
Tip — The gesture switches itself off over full-screen games and excluded apps. To pause everything for a while press Ctrl+Alt+Pause; press it again to resume.

After Capture

The moment you confirm, the image goes to the clipboard first; what happens next follows Settings › Screen capture › [After capture].

KingCapture finish popup
  • Clipboard · saveIt goes to the clipboard (PNG + DIB) first, then to a file. Format (PNG · JPG · WEBP · BMP) and quality, file name pattern and save folder are under Settings › Storage and Screen capture.
  • Finish popupThe default. Shows a thumbnail with size and file size plus [Copy] [Edit] [Open folder]. It fades after 10 seconds and pauses while the mouse is over it.
  • Open in editorAnnotate and save right after capture. One window per image; opening the same file again brings that window to front.
  • External programHands the captured file to a program of your choice — put <file> in the command line as the placeholder. If auto-save is off, a temporary file is passed instead.
  • Pin to screenKeeps the capture in an always-on-top window (assignable hotkey Ctrl+Alt+N). Copy · save · editor · original size, and it can be excluded from other captures.
  • Capture toolbarCaptures started from the command line with /post:toolbar get a toolbar attached to the region — annotate · editor · pin · capture again · OCR · folder. Its docking and display time are under Settings › Screen capture › [Capture toolbar]; it cannot be chosen as the after-capture action.
Tip — Turn the capture sound off under Settings › Screen capture › [Capture sound].

Video Recording

Recording starts from the launcher, the tray or the hotkey (Ctrl+Alt+V). The result is MP4; audio recording produces m4a.

KingCapture recording control bar
  • StartingPick a target in the [Video recording] column of the launcher (region · window · full screen · around mouse · device · audio · game) and the control bar appears. Press [Record] or Ctrl+Alt+V.
  • Control bar[Record] → [Countdown 3/5/10 s] → [Auto-stop 1/5/10/30 min]. System sound · microphone · webcam PiP · image overlay · mosaic area · drawing mode buttons sit on the same bar.
  • Specific windowOnly that window is recorded even when you move, cover or minimize it. Closing the window finishes the recording automatically.
  • Game recordingHooks into the game to grab frames directly (D3D9/11/12 · OpenGL). A game running as administrator needs KingCapture as administrator too — the dialog on entry offers [Restart as administrator].
  • Quality · encoderSettings › Video recording: encoder Auto (picked for your graphics card) · FPS · quality, and [Quick Set ▼] presets (60 FPS · low-spec PC · YouTube upload · editing · long recordings). You can save presets of your own too.
  • After stoppingThe finish popup offers [Play] [Quick edit] [Open folder]. Quick edit trims a range (lossless or re-encode), changes size · speed, and exports GIF · WEBM · MP3 · AVI.
  • Safe if it crashesRecording is written to a temporary MKV and converted to MP4 on stop. After a power cut or forced exit it is recovered automatically on the next run.
Tip — Whether the cursor is recorded, plus cursor highlight · click animation · click sound, is under Settings › Mouse effects.

Handy Tools

Open them from the [Useful tools] column of the launcher or the tray menu. Hotkeys are assigned in Settings › Hotkeys.

Presentation tool

Draw on the current screen with pen · highlighter · arrows · shapes · numbers · text · emoji. Enter finishes (save · copy), Esc quits.

Magnifier

A round lens ×2–16 with a color card. Copy HEX · rgb · hsl, 3×3 average, WCAG contrast, color history. Follow · freeze · lock.

Ruler

px · dip · cm · inch, rotation, origin and reader. Hold Ctrl to find edges on screen and measure the width. Can be included in captures.

Crosshair

Full-screen crosshair with a loupe and a position · color card. Mark two points for distance · angle, copy a bounding box as CSS.

Protractor

Three clicks: center → first point → last point. 8× loupe, minor and reflex angle, the value is copied when confirmed.

Extract text (OCR)

Select a region and an overlay appears in place where you pick words to copy. Built-in Windows OCR — the language pack must be installed.

Tip — Crosshair and protractor are full-screen overlays, so only one of them is open at a time. Details (zoom · unit · radius …) are under Settings › Tools.

Hotkeys

Only some hotkeys are on out of the box; the rest have a reserved key or none at all — to keep the number of global keys low. All of them are changed in Settings › Hotkeys.

KingCapture hotkeys
Action Default key Out of the box
Capture region Ctrl+Alt+A On
Capture full screen Ctrl+Alt+F On
Capture active window Ctrl+Alt+W On
Repeat last region Ctrl+Alt+R On
Start or stop recording Ctrl+Alt+V On
Pause or resume all triggers Ctrl+Alt+Pause On
Pause or resume recording Ctrl+Alt+P Off
Cancel recording Ctrl+Alt+X Off
Pin to screen Ctrl+Alt+N Off
Open library Ctrl+Alt+H Off
Scrolling capture Ctrl+Alt+S Off
Capture region with PrtScn PrtScn Off
  • Actions not in the table — show/hide launcher · extract text (OCR) · freeform · shape · fixed size · web page · full screen/window/around mouse/device/game/audio recording · presentation tool · magnifier · ruler · crosshair · protractor — get whatever key you assign.
  • Presets — KingCapture default (Ctrl+Alt) · International (Ctrl+Shift+Alt, avoids AltGr clashes on European layouts) · PrtScn classic (PicPick style: region Shift+PrtScn · full screen PrtScn · active window Alt+PrtScn · scrolling Ctrl+Alt+PrtScn).
  • The Print Screen key is registered only after you turn on [Use the Print Screen key] at the top of the Hotkeys tab. If the Windows setting [Use the Print screen key to open screen capture] is on, the Windows Snipping Tool gets the key first.
  • Press the key you want in the hotkey editor and it is entered directly; duplicates are reported when you click [Apply].

When another program holds the key

A key that failed to register is shown in the tray tooltip and in the conflict diagnostics under Settings › Hotkeys as "taken by another program" (known programs are named). Close that program and it is re-registered within 3 seconds; otherwise pick a different key.

Tip — If Ctrl+Alt+letter collides with character input (AltGr) on your keyboard layout, choose the [International] preset.

Troubleshooting

Stuck? Check here first. If it still does not work, turn on logging and get in touch.

  • Web page capture is greyed outThe WebView2 Runtime is missing — the launcher item shows the reason. Install the runtime and it works right away; other capture and recording modes are unaffected.
  • Game recording cannot grab the gameA game running as administrator needs KingCapture as administrator too (you are told on entry). For games whose anti-cheat blocks the hook, turn on [Fall back to screen capture when the game cannot be hooked] under Settings › Game recording.
  • Gesture does not work over an admin windowWith an administrator window in front, only the Ctrl+Alt+drag gesture is blocked — Windows does not deliver that window's input to the hook of a program running with normal rights. Hotkeys (Ctrl+Alt+A and the others) still work, and the tray tooltip shows the reason. To use the gesture there as well, run KingCapture as administrator.
  • Recording items are greyed outThe recording components (ffmpeg) are missing. Reinstalling with the installer brings them back. Image capture keeps working regardless.
  • The program crashed while recordingOn the next run it is finished as MP4 with the note "The previous recording was recovered".
  • Reporting a problem with logsLogging is off by default. Turn on Settings › Developer › [Write a log file], reproduce the problem, then use [Open log] · [Copy diagnostic info] and paste the contents into your report.
  • Back to defaults[Reset all settings] in Settings. The logging switch is not affected by the reset.
Tip — Contact us through the KingTools support page — attaching the diagnostics and the log makes it quick.
